Swimwear for Women Over 50: What to Actually Look For
Posted on Thursday, September 24, 2026
By 50, you’ve probably figured out a few things. What you like. What you don’t. And that life is far too short for bathers you have to yank back into place every five minutes.
So we’re not going to give you another guide about dressing to look younger, hiding your tummy or finding the most “flattering” swimsuit for your age.
This is about finding bloody good swimwear that works for you.
Let’s dive in.
Firstly, what actually changes from 50
At 50, your BS detector is dialled aaaaall the way up. You know what you want from your wardrobe, and your bathers are no exception.
- You think more about sun protection. Decades of sunshine add up, and chances are UV protection is higher on the priority list than it once was.
- Comfort becomes non-negotiable. Digging straps, rogue waistbands and bathers that need constant adjusting? You’ve got better things to do.
- You know how much coverage feels good to you. Maybe that’s long sleeves and swim shorts. Maybe it’s still a bikini. Either way, you know what makes you comfortable.
- You expect more from what you buy. You want pieces that last, perform and ideally take you from the ocean to lunch without a complete outfit change.
What doesn't change after 50
Plenty changes over the years. Your right to wear whatever the hell you like isn’t one of them.
- Wanting to look and feel amazing. End of story.
- Having an eye for great colour and style. Turning 50 does not suddenly trigger an uncontrollable desire to dress exclusively in black.
- Living an active life. Whether it’s morning laps, ocean swims, paddleboarding or simply running around with the family, you’re still out there doing it.
- Wanting a choice. More coverage, less coverage, sleeves, shorts, one-pieces, two-pieces. Your age doesn’t get to make that decision for you.
Your no-BS swimwear checklist
So, what separates a genuinely good pair of bathers from the ones destined to spend the summer at the bottom of your drawer? A few things are worth checking before you buy.
- Support that’s actually built in
Look for structured cups, shelf bras, removable inserts and wider straps. Support should come from thoughtful construction, not from squeezing you within an inch of your life. - Fabric that passes the wet test
Double lining matters. Your bathers should feel substantial, hold their shape and, most importantly, stay opaque when wet. - Waistbands and leg openings that stay put
More fabric doesn't automatically mean more comfort. Look for considered waistbands that hold without digging, rolling or requiring constant readjustment. - Sun protection you can verify
If UV protection is important to you, look for certified UPF 50+ fabric rather than vague claims about being “sun-safe”. - Sizing designed for actual bodies
A great size range is one thing. A great fit across that size range is another. Look for brands that consider how proportions, support and construction need to change across sizes, rather than simply scaling one pattern up.
Forget “dressing for your age”
Can we retire this one already?
There is no universally flattering swimsuit for women over 50, because there is no universal 50-year-old body, lifestyle or personal style.
Want a one-piece with plenty of support? Wear it. Prefer a bikini? Excellent. Want long sleeves and swim leggings because you’d rather skip the sunscreen gymnastics? Go for it. Want something bright enough to spot from the other side of the beach? Even better.
The goal isn’t to find swimwear that makes you look younger, slimmer or more “appropriate”. It’s to find swimwear that lets you forget about your swimwear altogether.
Made for women, not age brackets
At Sheila, we don’t believe turning 50 should suddenly shrink your swimwear options.
Our pieces are designed for real bodies and real life, with considered support, certified UPF 50+ protection, premium recycled fabrics and sizes AU 6–24.
More coverage if you want it. Less if you don’t. Colour, comfort, support and plenty of options in between.
Because when it comes to great swimwear, there’s only one person it needs to feel right for: you.
