Best No-Underwire Swimsuits for a Large Bust

Posted on Thursday, September 24, 2026

If you have a fuller chest, you’ve probably spent your whole life being told the same rule: if you want lift, shape and security, you must wear underwire.

Not on our watch.

We believe support for larger busts shouldn’t have to come from a strip of metal. With smart patternmaking, balanced weight distribution and high-recovery fabrics, you can create swimwear that does the heavy lifting without the wire.

Let’s get into how.

Why underwire often fails a larger bust in swimwear

Unlike an everyday bra, swimwear has to move. You’re diving, stretching, swimming, and battling waves – and a rigid wire simply can’t keep up. The result? Pinching, poking, and friction right where you want it least.

Add in salt water, chlorine, sunscreen, and heat, and underwire swimwear quickly deteriorates into familiar headaches:

  • The inevitable poke-through
Sharp edges piercing through the casing, usually right under your armpit mid-swim.
  • Warping, rust and breakage
Repeated exposure to salt, chlorine and moisture can wear down metal hardware over time.
  • Too much pressure on your shoulders
Underwire alone doesn’t create great support. Without considered construction and weight distribution, your straps can end up doing too much of the work, leaving painful red grooves behind.

What actually supports a large bust instead of wire?

If there’s no underwire, where does the lift come from? Clever construction, people!  Instead of relying on one rigid point of pressure, effective swimwear spreads support across your whole body. Here’s how:

1. A structured, wider underbust band

A wide, reinforced band anchors the swimsuit against your ribcage, lifting from below without digging in or rolling up. Once this construction is right, your neck and shoulders don’t have to pick up the extra slack.

2. Moulded or integrated foam cups

Built-in foam cups add shape and structure without a millimetre of stiff boning, creating a smooth, rounded profile without squashing everything flat.

3. Adjustable, wider-set straps

Wider straps spread the load across your shoulders instead of digging in like cheese wire, while adjustable sliders let you find the fit that feels right for you.

4. Racerback or crossback construction

Racerback and crossback designs spread support across your upper back, help stabilise your bust and keep straps firmly on your shoulders.

5. Fully lined, high-recovery fabric

High-recovery fabric stretches with your body, then springs back into shape to keep everything secure. Double lining adds another layer of support and coverage – wet or dry.

Don’t just take our word for it

We know it’s one thing for a brand to tell you their wire-free swim top is supportive. It’s another thing entirely to have it put through the wringer by independent reviewers and come out on top (!!).

Our Nellie Scoop Bikini Top was awarded Most Supportive in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 roundup of the Best Swimsuit Brands.

They didn’t take it easy on us, either. Reviewers put the top through its paces with paddleboarding and beach volleyball to find out if wire-free support actually holds its own on a fuller bust.

The verdict? It damn well does! One 38G reviewer even said it gave her all the lift and coverage she needed – without having to stop and adjust herself once.

More wire-free options for a larger bust

Our Nellie Scoop Bikini Top isn’t the only one bringing the support. Depending on how much coverage you like and how you spend your beach days, there are a few more wire-free options worth knowing.

Want more coverage? Try Bindi.

If you like to feel a little more locked in, the Bindi Racerback Swim Top has your back (literally). A high neckline, built-in shelf bra and wide racerback keep everything comfortably in place.

Prefer a one-piece? Meet Mina.

The Mina One Piece combines an internal shelf bra, removable cups and adjustable straps for a secure fit, while clever seaming follows your curves rather than flattening them. Think: all the hold, none of the metal hardware.

How to check the fit once it arrives

When your Sheila order lands on your doorstep, run through this quick checklist to ensure you’ve got the right fit.

✔️ The Underbust Check
The bottom band should sit completely level around your ribcage, resting flush against your skin. If it’s riding up in the back, the band is too loose. If it’s pinching or folding over, it’s too tight.

✔️ The Reach and Jump Test
Put the top on, adjust your straps, and do two star jumps, followed by reaching both arms straight overhead. Did you have to reach down and yank the band back into place? Did your bust spill out of the bottom or sides? If the top stayed firmly anchored, you've found your match.

✔️ The Cup Flush
Look at the neckline. The cups should sit smooth and flat against your chest. If the fabric is wrinkling or gaping away from your skin, try sizing down. If you’re spilling over the top edge or sides, you need the next size up.

A quick note on sizing: Bodies change, cycles happen, and swimwear stretches slightly when wet. If you’re between sizes and prefer a compressive, locked-in fit for surfing and sports, size down.

If you prefer a relaxed feel with room for natural fluctuations, take the larger size. Always check your measurements against the Sheila Size Guide rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a swimsuit really support a large bust without underwire?

Absolutely! By replacing rigid wire with a wide structural underbust band, integrated or removable foam cups, adjustable straps, and double-lined compressive fabric, you get reliable lift and security without the pain of metal hardware.

What cup sizes does Sheila’s Nellie top fit best?

The Nellie Scoop Bikini Top is optimised to fit and support cup sizes C through E (AU sizing), which translates to C through DDD in US sizing.

Is a racerback more supportive than a regular bikini top for a bigger bust?

For active movement, yes. A racerback design like Bindi pulls the straps toward the centre of your back, distributing the physical weight of your chest evenly across your upper back and trapezius muscles. This prevents straps from sliding down your shoulders and eliminates neck strain.

Will a wire-free swim top lose its shape over time?

Only if it's made from cheap, single-layer fabric. Sheila uses GRS-certified recycled nylon with premium elastane that offers high stretch recovery. Because every piece is fully double-lined, the fabric holds its shape and compression across hundreds of swims in chlorine and salt water.

With all that said, it’s time to ditch the digging wire, dive in, and feel what real support feels like!
